Humans
The human species, or homo sapiens, have many body systems including the Digestive System. The digestive system in humans is essential to our life especially to break down and release the foods we eat. The Digestive System is a series of organs and glands that help process food. In order to utilize the food we intake we must break it down into small molecules, the Digestive System does that. Organs that are included in the Digestive System are the Mouth, Esophagus, Stomach, Small and Large Intestines, Liver, Pancreas and the Gallbladder.
The Digestive process in humans starts in the mouth with breaking down the food with teeth and saliva. The food then travels through the esophagus where the broken down food is forced from the throat to the stomach. Once the food enters the stomach, it falls into gastric acid which is a very strong acid that breaks the food down even further. From the stomach the broken down food is broken down even more in the small intestines by bile, pancreatic enzymes and digestive enzymes. The last step of the digestive process in humans before excretion is that the broken down food travels through the large intestine where water and electrolytes are taken out for use. The final step is excretion from the anus.
Overview
Mouth-breaks down the food using the teeth and saliva.
Esophagus-forces the food from the throat to the stomach.
Stomach-gastric acid breaks down the food even more.
Small Intestine-the food is broken down even more by bile and other enzymes.
Large Intestine-water and electrolytes are extracted for later use.
Pancreas-secretes enzymes into the Small Intestine that break down the food.
Liver-makes and secretes bile for later use, and purifies the byproducts that are extracted in the Large Intestine.
Gallbladder-send the bile into the Small Intestine.
