The phylum Cnidaria is composed of marine species, and includes types of animals such as jellyfish, coral, and sea anemones. They are distinguished by having cnidocytes: specialized cells that contain a hollow hook-like organelle called a cnidocyst. The hooks, which sometimes contain poisons, are used to capture prey and deter predators.
